CHILDREN’S WELLBEING — AN INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE: IMPRESSIONS FROM THE INTERNATIONAL SUMMIT

On October 21–22, the international summit “Investing in Children’s Wellbeing: Toward Sustainable and Fair Development for Future Generations” held in Samarkand became an important platform for discussing scientific research, public policy, and international cooperation aimed at improving children's lives.

Within the framework of the summit, the Rector of our university, Mukhsinjon Kholmukhamedov, moderated the session titled "Evidence-Based Approach to Children's Wellbeing: Research, Experience, and Collaboration for Future Generations." The session provided an opportunity to exchange views on supporting children across different countries, improving social protection systems, and the role of scientific evidence in formulating effective public policy.

The panel discussions featured Najy Benhassine, World Bank Country Director for Central Asia; Dr. Sahar El-Sonbaty, President of the National Council for Childcare and Motherhood in Egypt; Adrien Pawlik, Deputy Director of Research and Operations at J-PAL Europe; and Khurshid Zafari, Director of the Social Policy Lab under the National Social Protection Agency of Uzbekistan. Their expertise highlighted the crucial importance of international experience, rigorous research, and inter-agency collaboration in ensuring children's wellbeing.

One of the particularly notable aspects of the session was connecting scientific research to practical real-world challenges. J-PAL Europe researcher Dilnovoz Abdurazzakova presented her study on differences in career selection and educational pathways between girls and boys. Such studies are essential for gaining a deeper understanding of the factors shaping young people's futures, expanding educational opportunities, and making decisions based on solid evidence.

During the event, a meaningful discussion also took place with Lyudmila Kim, Program Director at the Uzbekistan–Columbia Center for Advancing Community Strengths and Social Wellbeing. Views were exchanged on volunteering opportunities for those interested in social service research. University representatives invited the center's delegation to visit the campus and expressed readiness to develop joint research initiatives and collaborative projects in the future.

Such international gatherings provide not only new knowledge, but also fresh ideas, professional connections, and partnership opportunities. They allow students, young researchers, and forward-thinking professionals to adopt a broader global perspective, learn from leading experts, and advance their own initiatives.

The issue of children's wellbeing is inextricably linked to our collective future. Improving it demands scientific knowledge, responsible decision-making, and united efforts. This summit in Samarkand once again demonstrated how vital dialogue and cooperation are in achieving this shared goal!
